Dr Aviva Nathan

Dr Aviva Nathan is a private Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Melbourne, with over 20 years’ experience in her field.

“Pregnancy is such a special time in your life. I’m here to guide you through it as smoothly and as safely as possible”

When I completed my medical degree at Monash University in 1997, I knew that female reproductive health was my calling.

I chose to become a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist because I want to provide healthcare to women of all ages. Because your health, and your family’s health, matters.

And throughout my internship, residency, and specialisation, I experienced first-hand why a female-led obstetrics and gynaecology team is important.

Because you need someone there who understands you.

I’ve been helping women across Melbourne have safe, successful births for over 20 years, both in low-risk situations, and in much more high-risk circumstances. I’ve worked with Melbourne’s leading gynaecologists with experience in laparoscopy, abdominal, and vaginal surgery.

This led me to open my private practice in 2009, with the aim of providing a cutting-edge standard of obstetric and gynaecology service and medical advice. My team and I are with you throughout your reproductive health and pregnancy journey, providing you with a level of warm, personalised care you can get with an all-female team.

I can’t wait to see you, and help you along your journey.

SPECIALISED
GYNAECOLOGY SERVICES

During my 20 years of experience providing women’s health service, I spent over 10 of those years running a pelvic pain clinic at Monash University. During this time I saw a wide range of gynaecological cases referred to me from other practitioners. This allowed me to build my skills so I can provide you with the best gynaecological service possible.

I’m here to help you understand your body, and make proactive choices for your health.

Your

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a pre-pregnancy consultation?

If you’re planning to get pregnant it’s often beneficial for a couple to organise a pre-pregnancy appointment. In this appointment you will discuss your medical histories and general health issues or concerns, with time to ask questions in preparation for being pregnant. We will also discuss the options for pre-pregnancy genetic testing, and organise any general blood tests, such as rubella. It’s also an opportunity to check your immunisations and cervical screening tests are up to date.

This consultation is about your health, too. During your appointment we can also cover your diet, the need for prenatal vitamin supplements, and exercise.

How do I book my first antenatal appointment?

We recommend phoning the rooms to book in for your pregnancy, soon after you find out you’re pregnant. During this call we’ll discuss options for your hospital bookings (Dr Nathan delivers at Cabrini and Waverley Private Hospitals), and book you in for your first appointment with us, which typically occurs at around 8-9 weeks pregnant.

You’ll need to see your GP prior to your first appointment to get a referral. You can book an appointment with Dr Nathan prior to seeing your GP, however you must have the referral by the time of your first appointment.

Your appointment schedule will look like this:

  • 8-28 weeks: monthly
  • 28-36 weeks: fortnightly
  • 36 weeks-birth: weekly
What happens at my first appointment?

At your first appointment we take a comprehensive personal and family history, and provide you with the opportunity to discuss all aspects of your health and pregnancy. If you’re pregnant, we’ll also perform an ultrasound, so you can meet your new baby for the very first time.

You’ll also have the opportunity to meet with Lisa, our midwife, at each pregnancy appointment.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring your referral, your medicare card and private health insurance details, and any results for pathology or ultrasound.

If you’re able to fax, email, or send in your referral and other information ahead of time, this will help us to get to know a bit about you first, and will make your initial consultation much more specific to your needs.

How do I book in for my pregnancy?

You can call us on 9527 9000 to book in for your pregnancy. We’ll ask you for the date of your last menstrual period and calculate your estimated due date. We’ll then send through your booking to either Cabrini or Waverley Private Hospitals, whichever is best for you.

If you haven't seen your GP yet, it’s a good idea to do so and confirm your pregnancy. This allows you to claim back your Medicare rebate.

Then, we can book your first antenatal appointment to see Dr Nathan at 8-10 weeks. We look forward to meeting you.

Which hospitals does Dr Nathan visit?

For pregnancy and delivery, Dr Nathan is accredited to deliver babies at Cabrini and Waverley Private Hospitals.

For gynaecology procedures Dr Nathan operates at Masada Hospital and Holmesglen Private Hospital as well.

What is your COVID Policy?

The advice on COVID-19 is changing constantly, so we will update you on our social media pages as new advice comes through.

Our current COVID-safe plan includes:

  • Asking patients if they have any flu-like symptoms or have been in contact with anyone who has COVID-19 to please reschedule their appointment.
  • Temperature check on arrival to the clinic.
  • Our staff regularly clean and sanitise all surfaces and wear PPE.
  • We also offer Telehealth appointments where suitable.

Currently we ask our patients to please wait in their car, and we call you in when we’re ready for your appointment, in order to minimise the number of people in our waiting room.
